The stabbing occurred Sunday night March 7, at the Cottage Inn bar on the outskirts of Pinson.  

     Lt Randy Christian said that Calvert was stabbed several times in the chest following a conversation with Avant.  Investigators said that Calvert was sitting by the bar talking with Avant who was sitting in a booth.  Calvert walked over to the booth, Avant stood up the two shook hands and continued their conversation.  A few minutes later it appeared that Avant started punching Calvert Christian said.  As Calvert backed away from him, Avant dropped a folding knife, then picked it back up.  Avant was told by a patron to leave the bar.  Calvert sat down on a bar stool which is when other patrons noticed he had been stabbed in the chest and stomach.  He was flown by helicopter to UAB.  Christian said deputies found the suspect's car and keys at the bar and issued a BOLO for Avant and notified the Blount County Sheriffs office.
After turning himself in, Avant was released on $75,000 bond. Investigation is pending.
