Large amounts of rainfall can transmit pollutants and have a negative effect on water quality. What can you do to prevent water pollution?
• Don’t litter; pick up trash wherever it is found, especially near storm drains • Dispose of household waste properly; never dump chemicals in the storm drain or stream • Cover garbage cans and remove waste contaminants surrounding them to prevent runoff from entering a storm drain • Dispose of pet waste properly by picking up after your pets • Use pesticides and fertilizers cautiously to prevent surface runoff into the storm drain or stream • Recycle used motor oil at participating service stations • Clean out septic tanks every 3-5 years
Protect our rivers and streams by reporting pollution such as chemicals, foul odors, sewage, or mud from a construction site runoff. Call the Jefferson County Department of Health Storm Water Hotline 205-930-1999
