Swine Flu update

Swine flu found in Madison County
update:
As a precautionary measure, the Jefferson County Department of Health has advised the school nurse to report the slightest symptoms.  During a morning screening on Tuesday, April 28th (as recommended by the Jefferson County Health Department), nine students returned home after the morning screening, one checked out later in the day, and three students checked out due to dizziness (motion sickness from being on the ship all weekend and adjusting back to land).  Under normal students would remain in school for headaches, running noses, cough, etc.  As a precaution, these students returned home.

Three of these students visited their doctor’s office and a rapid flu test was performed with negative results.    One doctor opted to use the traditional flu test which results in a longer culture time.  Results will not be returned for several days.  Although the student was cleared to return to school by the doctor, our school nurse asked the student to remain at home until the results are received just as a precaution

During the Wednesday, April 29  morning screening (recommended by the Jefferson County Health Department), 15 students returned home as a precautionary measure with two students checking out due to dizziness (motion sickness from being on the ship all weekend and adjusting back to land) .  Administrators reiterate that at this time they do not have any diagnosed cases of swine flu.

Trussville’s Board of Education continues to communicate with Elizabeth Turnipseed, MD, MSPH the Director of Disease Control for the Jefferson County Department of Health.

Also the AHSAA sports association has suspended sports activities until Monday.  Madison Co. schools have closed as have a Huntsville school.  State Health officer Dr. Don Williams said today that they are receiving a large amount of samples to test.  He said they are increasing staff to test the increasing load.  He said that there are two cases that are 95% confirmed to have Swine Flu in Madison County. Williams said not to expect this to be the only school with students to show signs of Swine Flu and parents should be making plans should their child’s school be closed.
